NHS STAFF AND STAKEHOLDERS GET TO GRIPS WITH EMERGING FINDINGS
19 June 2009
Health and well-being experts from across the health sector had the chance to review and shape the emerging findings of the Boorman Review earlier this month.
The Call for Evidence workshops, held in London (June 9) and Leeds (June 17), were designed to give contributors to the Review the opportunity to discuss emerging evidence, and to begin to shape a workable and effective health and well-being model for the future.
Occupational health and HR staff from NHS organisations and key stakeholders welcomed the opportunity to hear Dr Steve Boorman set out the case for change for improving health and well-being throughout the NHS.
The consensus among attendees at both events – based on direct feedback – was that it is currently much harder than it should be to encourage a more proactive approach to staff health and well-being within the health service. Delegates clearly identified the need for the NHS to do more to develop a culture that supports staff health and well-being, with clear responsibility at the right level in each organisation.
Dr Steve Boorman said, “These workshops have been both productive and inspiring, providing an invaluable opportunity to share knowledge and experiences, and to learn from each other’s successes. The workshops at both events have been a powerful illustration that there is a real need for us to collectively contribute to an NHS which fosters a genuine culture of health and well-being for staff.”
In addition to learning about the progress of the review so far, attendees took part in workshops that further examined:
* emerging evidence from the staff perception survey;
* the economic cost of workplace ill-health and how it can be measured; and
*
health and well-being good practice.
Both events were well attended and provided the Review team with detailed insight and constructive feedback on existing and future health and well-being schemes.
Jane Cottrell, Head of Nursing for Medical Services, Heatherwood and Wrexham Park Hospital said it was, “One of the best events I have been to in a long time.”
Anne Marlow, Strategic Workforce Development Manager agreed, “The exercise was very enjoyable and productive {and} it would be helpful to expand on the ideas generated on a continuing basis.”
Following on from the Call for Evidence workshop events, the Review team will be running 10 SHA Roadshows during August and September, giving key stakeholders the opportunity to share and discuss the key findings of the Interim Report.
