Anticipation grows as David Nicholson welcomes upcoming interim report

29 July 2009

Anticipation is growing around the launch in August of Dr Steve Boorman’s Interim Report into the health and well-being of NHS staff.

As staff, stakeholders and contributors to the review gathered last week for a one-off pre-launch discussion event, Steve Boorman took the opportunity to welcome recent words of encouragement from NHS Chief Executive David Nicholson.

Emphasising his support for the review, David Nicholson said recently:
“A key part of our ambition is to turn the NHS from a service focused on sickness to one that promotes and supports wellness. We want to give ourselves the best chance of success at improving quality for our patients. Focusing on the health and well-being of NHS staff is critical to our plans.

“Dr Steve Boorman's Review is an important step in both understanding where we are now and what we can do to improve staff health and well-being in the future. I would really like to encourage people to engage with Steve's Review and take the opportunity to have your say.”

The Interim Report will be launched at an event in London on Wednesday August 19, where Dr Boorman will speak alongside David Nicholson and Dame Carol Black.

Last week’s discussion forum (July 16) offered over 100 attendees an exclusive insight into the developing interim recommendations.

Dr Steve Boorman said: “This event was a great opportunity to share our developing conclusions on the back of the wealth of evidence we’ve gathered to date, and I’m extremely grateful to all those who took part.

It is very important that we continue to hear from those who are on the frontline of NHS provision, particularly as this feedback will help us shape the recommendations for the Final Report which will be published before the end of the year.”

Dr Boorman also called for staff and stakeholders to ensure they book a place on one of the series of roadshow events [hyperlink to events page] taking place in every SHA across England over August and September. The August 19 event is the first of these, and each will offer staff and stakeholders the opportunity to offer their feedback on the interim report and input ahead of the final recommendations.

Feedback from the July 16 pre-launch event has been very positive. Attendees were invited to engage directly with the review team on key themes, and participated in voting on different aspects of the emerging findings. Comments afterwards included: “I got the sense that people's views were being listened to and will be taken on board by the Review team”, and “I felt that the people involved were genuinely interested and passionate about it”.

In addition to the upcoming events, staff and stakeholders were also invited to make use of new feedback mechanisms available on the review website (www.nhshealthandwellbeing.org) – including a new Ask Steve option allowing visitors to the site to ask questions directly of Dr Boorman.
